Operation: Mexico, Day 6.
After the initial awe at the beauty and “bigness“ of Texas, it only takes a few hours of driving down the very long highway looking at the very flat plains to make you start wishing for a change in scenery. However, after four days on the road, in the middle of our second-longest day of travel (10.5 hours), with Jude screaming as he sat in a diaper that was overflowing with p**p, and the driver realizing that we had lost track of our convoy, we were somehow still in good spirits in spite of the monotonous surroundings.
It has been a wonderful, challenging, long, and interesting start to our outreach to Mexico. We left Joliette on Friday the 27th, and have arrived in El Paso, where our Canadian team of 18 have joined with the team of 16 from Minnesota. The two teams combined, we have an age range from 9 months to 57 years, an aspect that brings incredible beauty and richness to our group ! We travel tomorrow into Mexico, and will drive to our destination in the town of Creel, where we will spend the week ministering to the local people and churches.
The theme of our trip is “unity,“ with the idea of uniting North America - Canada, the United States and Mexico. We are headed to Creel, a town in the state of Chihuahua, where we will be working with local churches to do ministry in the region. Our first priority is to glorify the Lord in all that we do, and we hope to see the kingdom of heaven expand as a result !
David is in the role of administrator, ensuring that we have all the necessary paperwork to cross multiple borders with unaccompanied minors, making housing arrangements for our travels, and managing the money $$. Elise is program director, and is responsible for organizing our times of ministry (programs with children, evangelization, church services, practical work projects, etc.).
This will be Jude’s 6th country, and he has been a champion during our travels. It is difficult being a baby, stuck in a carseat for many long days, not understanding why. But God’s grace has been with us and with him, and we are proud parents ! We look forward to seeing the ways God will use that irresistible little smile to soften hearts and open doors during our time in Mexico.
Due to time restraints and limited wifi, it is likely that we will be able to write another blog post before returning to Quebec on August 18th. In the meantime, please be praying for our team and our ministry ! Some specific requests:
1. For Jude's health. He had a bout of what we think was roseola in the four days leading up to the outreach, with a high fever (up to 40° C), vomiting, diarrhea and a rash. He doesn’t appear to have any lasting symptoms, but we would appreciate prayer that God would protect his -and our team’s- health during the outreach !
2. For team unity. Our Canadian team speaks French, the MN team speaks English, and we are ministering in a Spanish-speaking country. Please pray that the Holy Spirit helps us to overcome the language and cultural barriers to be the most effective in our work !
3. For God’s glory to be spread and His work to be done, rather than our own agendas.
4. For David and I. This is the first time we have done an outreach as a family (with a baby), and while we are not really worried at all, we realize that there could easily be points of tension. Please pray for an extra measure of grace and love between us, and that we can both keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
Thank you for your prayers, and hasta luego !
